Composts

When you talk about organic gardeing the key word is organic and organic matter. When it comes to organic matter the key word is COMPOST.

The single best source of organic matter for the garden is compost. It is the most beneficial of all soil additives. Compost is alive with beneficial microorganisms that work in unison with growing plants of all types. Its physical consistency allows it to hold moisture in sandy soils and loosen clay soils by separating the particles. Typically compost is made up of a mixture of leaves and other organic matter biologically processed by beneficial organisims. The most effective form of composting is done by aerobic bacteria. In the process of decomposition these organisims create heat forming energy that can raise the temperature of the surrounding material to as high as 140 degrees. This naturally generated heat destroys the viability of weed seeds and kills harmful bacteria and insects. By nature's own process it sterilizes itself. The result is a rich loam, full of nutrients processed by living organisms and readily available to plants. Humus and fulvic acid are both produced in the process. Humus and humic substances are responsible for increasing a plants ability to absorb minerals and organic compounds from the soil. They also are responsible for darkening the soil color. That is why light colored soils like very sandy soil or caleche are poor growing mediums because of their low humic content.

Few of us have access, even with our own compost heaps, to get all the compost we need. Nature's Guide Organic Compost, Nature's Guide Cotton Burr Compost, Nature's Guide Mushroom Compost, and Nature's Guide Shale and Compost mixture fill the bill.
